Family, household and rural society in 1838.
This research was made using historical population samples from the 1838 census of Wallachia, the first modern Romanian census. The results were initially disseminated as an exhibition held at the Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, in September -October 2021.
Studying rural society from the perspective of the realities revealed by the census (and not social norms reflected by other sources), we are able to nuance our knowledge about households in the past. Compared to the ”traditional Romanian household”, documented din the 1930s-1940s by the sociological school, the one uncovered in the first half of the 19th century seems either more simple, either more complex, depending on geography and economy.
