Wife’s grievance

The loss of a spouse was followed by widowhood, but also by remarriage. Some could experience a very troubled family life, marked by several deaths or abandonments, or by unhappy marriage, as was the case of Maria Lica from village Vârâți (Dolj).

The weavers

When widowhood was not followed by remariage, oftentimes individuals would find ways to care for themselves. In Balta, half of widows were „torcătoare” - weavers - meaning that they weaved for money. Among them, the vast majority (84%) were also heads of household.

The shepherd boy

As time went on and families grew, child labor gradually began to contribute to household income. At the next census, that of 1859, one of the census agents recounts his surprising encounter with a 6 or 7 y.o. child who tended to cattle.
